Twenty-Two

The room is charged with testosterone. The pissing contest that seems to be happening between Will and Brandt couldn’t be missed by anyone other than Lexi. She’s off in her own world, scrolling through her phone, seemingly quite bored. Every so often she glances up and flicks her hair over her shoulders, then returns her attention to her phone.

A worm of jealousy coils inside of me. To be that ignorant and oblivious to my surroundings would be wonderful. There was a time not too long ago where it didn’t matter to me what happened around me. How I long to be back in school, or in London, out of my father’s reach.

A buzz interrupts the men’s competition and Lori’s voice crackles over the intercom.

“Your food has arrived, Ms. Black.” I press down the button and thank her. A few minutes later, Lori appears through the glass doors carrying the bags of Chinese food and sets them down on the far end of the room where there’s a long, skinny table. She bustles in and out of the room, gathering plates and cutlery. She makes her final appearance carrying a bottle of wine and some glasses.

“That will be all, Lori. Thank you for staying. Have a good night,” I say in a soft, grateful voice. Lori’s face pinkens, and she inclines her head in acknowledgement and exits the room. Lexi suddenly becomes aware of where she is when the smell of food reaches her nose. Her stomach grumbles loudly in the room. My lips tighten as I suppress a laugh. Brandt’s eyes catch mine and he seems to be biting back some laughter as well. We hold each other’s gaze for a few seconds and his pupils dilate, his eyes shining as he looks at me.

My heart aches. Will clears his throat beside me and he grabs my hand. He stands up, tugging me to my feet, and guides us over to where the food is set up. Will takes his time dishing out food for the both of us. As he opens each of the containers, savoury curls of steam circle in the air, and I finally realize just how hungry I am.

I take my full plate of food from Will and grab the bottle of wine to bring it to the table. Will grabs a few glasses and follows me back to our seats. As I uncork the wine, my eyes drift over to Lexi and Brandt, who are over by the food. He is standing close behind her as she’s piling her plate with food. Heaping mountains of food cover her plate, and I wonder where the hell she puts it all in her tiny, slim body. Her curves are glorious; her ass and breasts are both respectively large. A pang of jealousy hits me as I can see why men, and Brandt, find her attractive.

But it’s not just her curves. It’s her petite frame, her delicate, long lashes, and her perfectly pouty lips. The way her eyes glow and crinkle when she giggles, and her lilting, melodic voice.
